De staat bestaat uit 137 vulkanische eilanden (waarvan de meeste klein en onbewoond) in het midden van de Stille Oceaan, waarvan de belangrijkste worden gevormd door de Hawaïaanse eilanden, een archipel met 19 eilanden. Er zijn 8 grote eilanden; van west naar oost: 1 - Ni'ihau 2 - Kauai 3 - Oahu 4 - Molokai 5 - Lanai 6 - Kaho'olawe 7 - Maui 8 - Hawaii (big Island)
